Strategies for Decoding the Written Word

Use pictures.
Skip and go back. Put a word in its place.
Substitute a word that fits.
Try it again. Go back and reread the sentence.
Have you seen the word before? Find it.
Self-correct.
Ask: How does the word begin? How does the word end?
Look for little words in a big word.
Blend together all the sounds.
Ask: Does that make sense? Does that sound right? Does that look right?
