The Students at Westy Have Been Climbing the Walls
The PE classes just finished up a unit on rock climbing. Not surprisingly, the rock wall is a popular unit for most of the students. As you’d expect, one of the goals of climbing is improving upper body strength, but the wall offers the opportunity to make improvements in many areas. Some of the other areas students often make improvements in are:
Problem solving
Creative movement
Balance
Self confidence
Motor planning
Flexibility
Peer interaction
One of the greatest benefits of the rock wall is seeing some of the students that don’t always do as well in the typical PE activities step up and be leaders in some of the challenges. Each day students were given a new challenge on the wall, either individual or group. This is where the problem solving and creativity came in. Below is a slide show of some the students using the wall.
