St. George Kindergartners Learn About the Monarch Butterfly

by Mendy Gehrt

September 07, 2007

Gage, Aidan, and Caisen get a closer look at the caterpillars in Mrs. Gehrt's class.

The St. George Elementary kindergartners have been learning about the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly.  They have learned the stages that the Monarch goes through; the egg stage, the caterpillar, (larvae) stage, the chrysalis, (pupa) stage, and lastly the adult butterfly stage.

Many of the kids brought in caterpillars and milk weed for the caterpillars to munch on.  The kids are responsible for providing new milk weed for the caterpillars daily and misting them with a spray bottle of water to keep the milk weed moist.

The fourth generation Monarch butterflies lay their eggs in Kansas in September and October. This generation migrates to Mexico and Southern California where it will lay eggs to continue the life cycle.
