Owl Pellet Dissection

Mrs. Nelson’s homeroom class dissected owl pellets as a way of learning about animal interdependency and adaptations to their environment. After an owl hunts and eats its prey the food material that is too hard (usually bones) or indigestible (feathers or fur) is regurgitated as an owl pellet. The students found numerous voles, shrews, and rats in their pellets. Students thought it was interesting that some pellets contained no animal skulls, while other animals had up to 9 vole skulls in them.
