The 3rd and 4th graders at SGES just completed a unit on Western Movement.
One of the many experiences they had was to have “Kit Carson”, AKA Janet Armstead, visit the classroom. Kit shared his adventures and brought many of the things he took with him on the trail.
We concluded our unit by taking a field trip to the Oregon Trail Park and to the Kansas Museum of History. We started the morning by hiking the trail. Even though it was windy, we were happy that the rain held off. After our 30 minute hike, we loaded the bus and headed to the Museum.
At the museum, we enjoyed the new Kansas Weather exhibit and the Discovery Place, where students were transferred back in time and had a chance to dress up, play games, and role play in the time of the pioneers.
After eating lunch, we enjoyed the main gallery of the museum. Each group had a scavenger hunt that they went in search of the answers. The other group participated in a guided tour “Westward Ho!”
The guide focused on the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails. While on the tour, the students had a chance to get an up close look at the supplies they took on the trail. A couple of students were even given the opportunity to try to start a fire…without a match!
