RC Schools Continue Standard of Excellence on State Assessments

by Darrel Stufflebeam

May 06, 2008

Our students recently completed state assessments and the preliminary results are very impressive.  As you probably know, students in grades 3-8 and one high school grade take reading and math tests each year and those tests determine whether students, their school, and the district achieve Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).  Test results fall into one of five categories.  A certain percentage of students must reach the third category of “Meets Expectations” in order for AYP to be achieved.  The top category is called “Exemplary”.  The percentage needed to achieve AYP goes up each year and, in 2014, all students are expected to achieve AYP.  Here are our preliminary results:

At Westmoreland Elementary School, 100% of students achieved AYP in reading and 99% achieved AYP in math.  Also, 42% of students scored in the Exemplary category on the reading test and 45% of the students scored in the Exemplary category for the math test.

At St. George Elementary School, 98% of students achieved AYP in reading and 99% of students achieved AYP in math.  55.5% of students scored Exemplary in math and 50.3% scored Exemplary in reading.

At RCJSHS, 98% of student achieved AYP in reading and 94% achieved AYP in math.  On average, 40% of students scored Exemplary in reading and 37% scored Exemplary in Math.

Please keep in mind that these results are preliminary and will likely change a little.  Official results and state-wide comparisons will be available in the fall and I’ll update you at that time.  In the meantime, I think we can be confident that our schools are continuing their tradition of achieving a standard of excellence that is nearly unmatched in Kansas.

In other news, we will be hosting an open house for the new vocational building on April 24th at 8:30 following the FFA Banquet.  Please feel free to join us for a tour of this wonderful facility.  Progress on the new SGE continues at a fairly rapid pace.  We hope to be able to move in prior to the start of the school year.  If not, we’ll move in as soon as possible.  There are no plans to use a few school days for the move if we can’t complete the move by the first day of school (August 14th) but that was one of several options recently discussed at a BOE meeting.

Finally, as the school year winds down, I want to thank all of the staff, faculty, students, parents, and patrons for another terrific school year.  Without their hard work and support, we couldn’t continue to be one of the best school districts in the state
