The USD 323 Board of Education recently met to discuss various topics and to select goals for the upcoming school year. The meeting took place in the new SGES and was preceded by a tour of that facility. Here are some of the highlights and results:
1. The school administration will be conducting a feasibility study of a universal pre-school program in each elementary school.
2. New Facility Funding won’t take place this year due to a decrease in state funding and the uncertainty of when we will be moving into the new building. However, we will set priorities for facility improvements and equipment purchases for this year and revisit New Facility Funding next year.
3. We will be studying the feasibility of a baseball/softball facility located at RCJSHS.
4. We hope to move into the new SGES in late August or September. A preliminary move of non-essential materials and equipment will take place over the August 9th weekend.
5. We will hire crossing guards for the intersection south of the new SGES. A crossing guard will be on duty one hour before and one hour after school. Even though we aren’t starting school in the new building, the crossing guard will be on duty the first day of school for students crossing Military Trail Road from the PowerCat subdivision.
In other district news, there are preliminary indications that our school district is
continuing to grow—particularly at SGES. Last year, SGES added about 30 new students and it looks like the growing trend might continue. We hired one additional teacher at the 3-4 level and, due to a higher than usual influx of new 5-6 students over the summer, we’re looking at adding a teacher or teacher’s aide to that level as well.
Our high state assessment scores, terrific new facilities, other facility improvements, outstanding faculty and staff, and outlook for continued growth indicate another exciting and successful year is ahead of us.
