Moving Dates for SGES Announced

September 12, 2008

The moving dates for the new SGES will be Saturday, September 27th to Monday, September 29th.  There will be no school at SGES on September 29th to give faculty and staff time to unpack and organize the building.  SGES parents will receive a letter with more information but, as always, please feel free to contact the school or district with any questions. Anyone interested in helping with the move should contact Debbie Edwards at 494-2482.  We will announce a date for a public open house sometime next month.

Beginning the first day at the new location, we will have crossing guards available for students crossing Blackjack Road and Military Trail Road.  The two-way student drop-off and pick-up lane is located on the north side of the building.  Vehicles will enter the lane at Blackjack Road and turn around using the secondary (west side) parking lot.  School buses will enter the one-way bus lane on the north side and exit on the south side.

Since each multi-age level has its own specific wing, the building serves as four distinct schools within-a-school. Each wing has its own distinct design elements (colors, shapes, science themes) and a lobby that can be used for small reading/math groups or larger presentations for the entire multi-age level.  For concerts and presentations, the cafeteria serves as a multi-purpose room that includes a stage and sound system.  There will be a grant-funded outdoor classroom on the northwest side of the site.  The outdoor classroom will include water elements and flora and fauna native to the Flint Hills region of Kansas.  Recreation facilities include two playgrounds with basketball, tetherball, and four square courts, and a multi-purpose grass field on the north side of the site.  The gymnasium will have a wooden competition floor, bleachers, six basketball goals, and two volleyball courts.

We are nearing the end of a long, difficult, but exciting road.  As I’ve said many times before, the end of this road will likely signal the beginning of a journey down a new road.  The growth at SGES over the past two years indicates that additional space may be needed at RCJSHS at some point in the future.  There may be needs for facility improvements at WES and/or some of the pre-planned additions at SGES as well.

We are lucky to be part of a school district that is thriving and forward-thinking.  As you’re probably aware, many school districts throughout the state are struggling with declining enrollment and the resulting loss of financing, curriculum, and personnel.  Our challenges are great but they provide opportunities to improve an already top-notch school district.  As long as we have the continued support of our patrons and continue to focus on doing what’s best for our students we will continue to meet those challenges and provide a first-rate service for Rock Creek families.
