This month we took study trips to the Westmoreland Fire Station and Pottawatomie Sheriff's Department to learn about the jobs of each career and to learn about personal safety. We also turned our play center into a Fire Station/Sheriff Office.
October brings autumn and Halloween! The class voted to carve two pumpkins into a Silly Sally and a Mean Mac. We preserved one pumpkin (of course it was Silly Sally) by soaking it in water over night and rubbing Vaseline on the cut edges. As scientists, we will be watching and recording the deterioration of both pumpkins to compare them. Students are bringing in all kinds of leaves so we can examine them. We are learning all kinds of facts and are making a leaf rubbing class book. Our Science table also has three water tadpoles of which two turned into frogs this past week. We are excitedly waiting for the other one to loose its tail.
Math is keeping us busy learning how to make and extend patterns, how to make growing and shrinking patterns, how to count objects and draw representations of what we counted, and how to take inventory. Our patterning and counting skills are soaring!
