Monitor Comprehension:
How do I know? (When have you lost understanding?)
1. When you close your eyes and can’t see what is happening inside your head.
2. Listen for the voice inside your head.
3. Stop reading. Try to recall what you’ve just read. Write a short note.
4. There is a new character and I don’t remember how they got into the story.
Fix-up Strategies:
Reread -- find out where you were first confused.
Make a connection between the text and:
your life.
what you know about the world.
another text read previously.
Write about what you have read.
Stop and think about what you have read.
Close your eyes and visualize what you read.
Make predictions.
Ask self questions and answer them.
Adjust the reading rate you use -- up and down to meet need for understanding.
Quick-Comps--write 2 words reflective of the material read and share words.
