Game Plan to Save Sports History
Westy Wildcats and Saint George Trojans
April 10, 2009
With the Rock
Creek Junior Senior High School era, beginning in the Fall of 1991,
hometown stars of the track (the court, the field, and the diamond)
are now “Mustangs”—no longer Westy Wildcats and Saint George
Trojans.
Rock Creek coaches Jim Johnston, Mike Zabel
and Dick Dugan put their heads together with Scott Harshbarger,
Athletic Director, and came up with a game plan to save some of
this District’s sports history.
The plan, with Coach Johnston calling the
plays, is to rescue and revitalize those memories of Wildcat and
Trojan history. Students in the Jr/Sr Leadership class at
Rock Creek got involved also, researching the sports history of
Westmoreland Rural High School and Saint George High School, as
well as Blaine and Flush High Schools.
A memorabilia display area has been created
in the alcove at the north end of the gymnasium at Rock Creek High
School. Local alumni donated jerseys, medals and pennants as
well as photographs to the project. Basketball and track
jerseys in shadow boxes, attractively displayed under track
lighting donated and installed by a Rock Creek parent, and track
record boards of all three schools are currently on display.

include the addition of football memorabilia as well as a framed
digital picture board to be purchased with memorial funds.
Memorabilia, including but not limited to,
printed programs, statistics, records and pictures can be donated
to the project by contacting Coach Jim Johnston at johnstoj@rockcreekschools.org
or by calling 785-494-8591.
