The Rock Creek Lady Mustangs captured their 3rd consecutive Hiawatha Tourney championship by defeating the Marysville Lady Bulldogs 50-32 this past Saturday.  It was also the 4th title the Mustangs have won in the last 5 years in this tournament.  The Mustangs finished 2nd in 2007.
On the previous Tuesday night, Rock Creek opened the tourney by trouncing Nemaha Valley 53-16.  The ‘Stangs used their great defense to shut out the Raiders in both the first and the fourth quarters in cruising to the victory as all 12 players saw considerable action.   The Mustangs were led in scoring by Taylor Ebert and Lizz Herrs, who both had 15 points.  Becky Lightfoot also had a great game by collecting 10 rebounds and handing out 7 assists.
In the semi-finals held Thursday night, Rock Creek met Falls City, Nebraska and once again broke the game open quickly.   In both the first and second quarters the Lady Mustangs poured in 20 points to explode to a commanding 40-18 half-time lead.
During the second half, all 12 team members played as the Mustangs once again cruised to a 61-34 win.   Leading the way for Rock Creek was Lizz Herrs with 17 points, and Taylor Ebert and Lora Blackwood, who added 10 points each.
In the championship game, the Mustangs jumped out to a quick 16-7 first quarter lead.  They continued to extend their advantage in the second quarter in taking a 29-16 half-time lead.   Then, at the start of the third quarter, Rock Creek scored the first 8 points to blow the game completely open.  The Lady Mustangs were never challenged after that point and went on to win by 18 points.  Rock Creek was led in scoring by Becky Lightfoot with 12 points and 7 rebounds.  Becca Snapp also chipped in with 9 points and 7 rebounds, while Lizz Herrs added 9 points.
Rock Creek had 3 players named to the All-Tourney team.   Selected to the team were Becky Lightfoot, Lizz Herrs, and Taylor Ebert.  In addition to the All-Tourney, Rock Creek freshmen Megan Srna and Shiann Bruce won the annual freshmen contests conducted during the week-long tourney.  Bruce won the free throw contest by sinking 13 out of 15 attempts, while Srna won the 3 point contest by hitting 8 out of 10 shots.
