Scholastic Art Awards Winners

     SEVEN Rock Creek students were winners at this year's Scholastic Art Awards in Wichita, Kansas.  This is the second year Rock Creek students have participated in this competition.  Last year four artworks were chosen for the state level recognition with one gold medal winner advancing to nationals.  This year eight artworks were chosen for state level recognition with THREE gold medal artworks advancing to nationals.
      The Scholastic Art Awards is open to all students in seventh to twelfth grade from 70 Kansas counties. The Scholastic Art Awards are the largest and longest running recognition program for young people in the United States. Maurice R. Robinson, the founder of Scholastic, Inc., the children’s publishing and entertainment company, established the awards in 1923. Alumni of the awards include Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath and Robert Redford.
    Rock Creek's Junior high winners were, for the general category-- Amanda Gross with her graphite drawing called “Pencil Whimsy” and Katherine Culbertson with her pen & ink called “Mythological Castle in Ink”.  Larissa Eshelman was a double Gold Medal winner with her two artworks---a pen & ink called “Inked Plumes” and her graphite and conte’ drawing called “Lizard on a Thumb in Pencil Dreams”.
    On the high school level, for the general category-- Angie Patrick was a winner with her Mixed Media, “Everyday Music”, Thomas Sheffield with his Silversmithing, “Unlock Love” and Anthony Dultmeier was a Silver Medal winner with his graphite drawing, “Fantasy in Graphite".  Paige Nickell's landscape painting "Pink Dreams"  received top honors as a Gold Medal winner.
    You are invited to view these and other original works by Kansas middle school and high school students now on exhibit at the Wichita Center for the Arts from January 26, 2010 – February 21, 2010. The WCFTA Gallery is open from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Tuesday – Sunday and admission is free.  The Scholastic Award Ceremony recognizing exceptional works from the exhibition will be held Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Irene Vickers Baker Theatre and is open to the public.    
    Congratulations to these talented students and to their art instructor Mrs. Pam Delay.  What an achievement!!
