FCCLA National Gold for Marin Coughlin and Mckenzy Umscheid

Marin Coughlin and Mckenzy Umscheid each received a Gold medal at the National STAR event competition this past week in Washington, DC. They earned a 97/100 and 95/100, respectively and did a tremendous job representing themselves, their school and Kansas FCCLA. I am extremely proud of their efforts.

Marin's STAR event was the event Job Interview where she had to research a possible career that she could currently obtain and create an in depth portfolio with her credentials and go through a rigorous interview process. She received a gold medal and our District competition and beat other students from across Kansas to be eligible to compete at Nationals and received an excellent score. Her judges wrote very positive remarks and applauded her professionalism, demeanor and speaking ability.

McKenzy's STAR event was a presentation in the Illustrated Talk category about her experience going on a fruit and vegetable juice-fast. She used many resources and research from her Senior exit project and put together a dynamic presentation highlighting FCCLA principles and ideals in her event. She also received very high remarks and positive comments from the judges.

Both students were extremely proud of their accomplishments and have enjoyed this National Conference in our Nation's capital. They have participated in youth leadership development workshops, heard from dynamic speakers and seen our country's history and legislative processes up close and personal. It was a fantastic trip and I am very proud of them.
