Rumor Mill

Welcome to The Rumor Mill

August 20, 2009

Rock Creek Schools strives to provide accurate information and maintain open lines of communication.  To meet that goal, we have established The Rumor Mill feature on our web-site.  Anyone can ask The Rumor Mill a question by sending an e-mail to rumormill@rockcreekschools.org.  Inquiries will be posted anonymously unless otherwise requested.

Rumors can spread quickly and be damaging so we encourage all patrons to let us know about any rumor they hear.  We’ll find out the truth as quickly as possible and post a reply on this page.  In order to protect individual privacy and maintain appropriate decorum, we reserve the right to screen or edit an inquiry prior to posting.

Rumor:  I've heard that both the St George and Westy buses that travel from the grade schools to RCHS in the AM are overcrowded.  Kids are sitting in the aisles on backpacks and gym bags.  Isn't this a safety issue?

The Rumor Mill:  There are no overcrowding problems for the buses that shuttle students from WES to RCJSHS.  There are two 65-passenger buses that shuttle 56 students each from SGES to RCJSHS in the morning, which is considered full due to the ages of the students.  Bus drivers appraise the need for more shuttle buses during the first few weeks of the year and report their status to the Transportation Director, who will likely soon switch to three shuttle buses from SGES to RCJSHS in the morning.  Students are not allowed to sit in the aisle of a school bus and our Transportation Director is making sure our bus drivers enforce that regulation.

Rumor:   I heard they were going to change the way they offer sports at Rock Creek if they go 4A, is that true?

The Rumor Mill:  You've probably heard that one of our goals this year is to examine what other school districts our size do in regard to athletes when sports team participation becomes unmanageable.  The choices include hiring more coaches and trying to schedule more games or cutting the number of participants.  We don't like the idea of cutting athletes who want to participate but nearly all larger schools do that out of necessity.  We'll research the matter, report back to the school board and, as always, keep our patrons informed.

Rumor:  I hear the school district has stopped accepting out-of-district students.  Is that true?

The Rumor Mill:  Due to large growth at SGES, the school district has decided to stop accepting new out-of-district students in a few of the lower grades at that school.  All previously attending out-of-district students are still being accepted and no other school has been affected.  Future decisions about out-of-district applications (new and previous) will be determined based on enrollment data and facility space.
